Artemisia is about creativity, ideas, beauty and fun. We are about art, music, dancing, curiosity, writing, building, and thinking.
The initial cost of the island has been paid by our founder, Zephyre Zabelin, in service to art. We strive to always be conscious of her gift to us and to be worthy of it by enjoying life and creating wonderful things.
Land is sold on an individual basis and once purchased may not be resold, divided or joined with other land without the expressed approval of the owner. When you "own" a parcel in a private estate like an island in SL, you really don't own it. The estate owner is the legal owner and retains absolute authority over the sim. If you purchase land like this, you are only purchasing from the estate owner the right to use the land under the conditions of the covenant. Because you are responsible only for a monthly fee paid to the owner and you have no financial stake in the property, I find it easier all around to think of our residents as renters rather than owners. So if I talk about rent, understand that you are the deeded parcel owner because you will have purchased it for no money. But ownership of a parcel here provides only limited rights.
There is currently no cost to purchase land here. This is more like a cooperative rental agreement where you just pay your share of the island's expenses. The parcel will be sold to you for $L0. You will be deeded the land in your name, but if you should decide to leave, you will surrender the land back to the owner. Artemisia is a privately owned sim so land ownership and SL tiers are not applicable. You do not have to be a member of SL to own land here. However, tiers (monthly fees paid to Linden Labs) are paid (preferably) through Paypal monthly to the island owner and are due on the first of the month.
You may not reside on Artemisia except by invitation. We are a small community of friends. We want people who are fun and interesting and creative. If you are not interested in being a part of a sociable creative community, you might be happier elsewhere. If you are interested in living here, please contact FreeWee Ling (see below).
In summary, the "rules" are:
- Our intent is to be as unrestricted as possible to allow the greatest opportunity for creative work. But we do have certain vague and arbitrary esthetic requirements:
- No eysores. Go ahead and defy convention, but if it's just plain ugly or offensive it will make it unpleasant for your neighbors and will devalue the island.
- The island is intended to be wide open to the public. You are welcome to build a home on your land, but you might want to make a personal space in the sky.
- No sky platforms under 350 meters without approval.
- We prefer that you not make very large objects that tend to dominate the landscape.
- If you are an artist or builder, you may sell your work here in an appropriate gallery-type space if you wish, but understand that this is a residential sim, not a commercial enterprise. We are here to provide an atmosphere for you to be creative. If you are commercially successful, more power to you, but do not expect sales at Artemisia to help pay your expenses.
- "No Entry" parcels are not allowed. Security fences or devices of any kind (other than locked doors) are prohibited on Artemisia except as approved by the owner. (Exceptions may be made for skybox residences. ) You may ban specific individuals from your parcel if necessary. If you are harrassed (griefed), please file a report with Linden and let us know so we can ban griefers from the island.
- No intrusive ads, but notecard/landmark givers are okay within your parcel. Gaudy signs (especially animated ones), are not permitted unless approved.
- Inspired art takes many forms - the relationship between an art appreciator, the art, and the artist is as unique as each human being on earth is. There are no mandates on the structures you build or the work that you show. Make something weird and ugly and audacious, and you may incur criticism -- even harsh criticism -- but you will not be asked to remove it unless it is blatantly offensive, whether by consensus of the residents or by fiat of the owner. Sexually explicit images should be placed within an enclosed gallery space. They are not allowed in open display. Owner reserves absolute right to ask you to remove any item deemed to be inappropriate or detrimental to the island and its culture. Refusal to remove an offending object may result in expulsion with no refunds of fees paid.
- This is a mature sim. Public nudity is permitted, but overt sexual behavior should be confined to sky-based private residences. In addition to behaviors restricted by the Linden TOS, open display of any behavior that could be considered degrading, sexist, ageist or racist is considered not in keeping with an open and welcoming community. Displays of Dom/sub (master/slave) behaviors by residents or visitors are not acceptable. All races, species, creeds, and colors will be welcome here.
- Parcel owners may not terraform. If you want an adjustment to your parcel, contact the owner for assistance.
- All objects must remain entirely within the resident's parcel. No objects are to be placed in common areas without the expressed permission of the owner. A sandbox area (most likely a sky platform) may be made available for occasional temporary use by residents working on large projects.
- Objects may not impede traffic over water areas, even if those areas are included in your parcel. (Water is generally only included within parcels to provide prims, not to allow expansion over the surface.)
- All rules are subject to ammendment and exception. Our intent is to provide as much freedom and stimulation and resources as we possibly can while ensuring the sustainability of the island. We don't want you to feel inhibited at all, but we do expect you to be civil and neighborly.
We truly hope that all who come to see the work and meet the artists on Artemisia will be understanding of how much of one's self goes into each creation and how this deserves courtesy from the viewer. Some of the artists here are SL artisans, many are RL artists. Do not hesitate to contact an artist if you are interested in purchasing their work.
